Milagrosong Banak III
Milagrosong Sta. Anang Banak II
- 36 x 24 in
Rooted in the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of Taguig, Milagrosong Sta. Anang Banak is an abstract tribute to a local miracle passed down through generations — the divine intercession of Sta. Ana and the miraculous abundance of banak (mullet fish) during a time of famine. According to legend, in the late 16th century, the people of Sta. Ana, Taguig suffered through devastating hunger and hardship. In their desperation, they turned to Sta. Ana, mother of the Blessed Virgin, for help. In answer to their prayers, the once-empty river filled with banak, nourishing an entire community and renewing their faith. This moment of divine grace has since been commemorated every July 26 with the Sta. Anang Banak Festival, a vibrant celebration of life, water, and shared hope. In this three-piece series, I reimagine the miracle not through figuration but through movement, energy, and spiritual geometry. Painted with acrylic, each piece is layered using heavy dry brushing to create texture and motion, while translucent glazing builds light, depth, and dimension. Angular forms pierce the canvas — symbolizing abundance, divine intervention, and the swift, glimmering presence of banak swimming through sacred waters. The dominant hues of midnight blue and gold evoke the mystical river at twilight — a time between the seen and the unseen, when miracles unfold. Embedded shapes — red and white squares, cascading lines, and golden dots — represent the tension between divine structure and the chaos of human need. This series is both a devotional homage to my hometown’s enduring faith and a visual meditation on how memory, myth, and miracle ripple through the soul of a place. Milagrosong Sta. Anang Banak is not just about fish — it’s about grace that arrives when we need it most.

Edgewalker
- 48 x 36 in
GSIS 20th Annual Art Competition Entry Edgewalker explores the quiet strength of a soul teetering on the brink. Through bold geometry, layered textures, and a single red square suspended in chaos, the piece portrays a person’s struggle with suicidal thoughts—and their choice to stay. Three tensioned cables anchor the imbalance, symbolizing unseen forces of hope, connection, and purpose. Amid disorder and weight, there is resilience. The painting is a tribute to those who walk the edge, yet refuse to fall.
